Most people who have a heart attack felt fine the week before. The damage was already happening. It just wasn’t loud enough to notice.
A business erodes the same way. Nobody wakes up and decides today is the day it falls apart. A little overhead creep here, a little softening in sales there, until someone finally reads the number, usually in front of a buyer or a lender instead of in the privacy of your own office.
Here’s what people miss about blood pressure. A cuff costs twenty dollars, and anyone can get a reading in thirty seconds. Knowing it’s 150 over 95 doesn’t lower it a single point. What changes the outcome is what comes after: someone who can tell you what that number means for you specifically, a plan built around your real life, and a recheck to see whether it’s working.
Your bank balance is the home cuff. It’s a number with no context, no trend, and no plan.
I owned a business for 30 years before I understood the difference between having a number and having a reading.
Pain doesn’t always mean disease, and disease doesn’t always mean pain. Ask the same question about your business. Is it healthy, running a little high, or already showing symptoms? Whatever the answer, a check-up is where it starts. Bad things don’t get better by being ignored.
